EUROSPAR Cobh and Sonia O’Sullivan team up to raise much needed funds for Cobh Hospital

Fun runs to commemorate 20th anniversary of Olympic glory

EUROSPAR Cobh’s Shane Jones has teamed up with local and Irish legend Sonia O’Sullivan and Friends of Cobh Hospital to sponsor a fundraising 3km run for the Cobh Community Hospital on Friday next, which is the 20th anniversary of Sonia’s Silver Medal glory at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

That date, September 25th 2000, is forever etched in the pantheon of Irish sporting achievements as the day when O’Sullivan finally landed a coveted Olympic medal.

Her time that day for the 5,000 metres (5 kilometres) was a blistering 14:41.02, a national Irish record. The first run of the day will take place at 10:55am, the exact time Sonia started her Olympic run.

The current restrictions, as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, has seen a number of charity fundraising events all around Ireland postponed, which has potentially devastating knock-on effects as a consequence. The 44-bed Cobh Community Hospital has served the local community for more than 100 years and has also been hit hard by the suspension of usual fund-raising methods.

Now, as we approach the 20th anniversary of Sonia’s magnificent achievement, a charity run has been organised to mark the occasion and raise some much needed funding for the local community hospital.

The distance from the Cobh Community Hospital to the commemorative statue of the Cobh legend is approximately 3000 metres or, as Sonia is now challenging people, the time Sonia posted for her 5,000 metres silver-medal winning run in 2000. EUROSPAR Cobh, Sonia and Friends of Cobh Hospital are inviting 200 people to challenge themselves to complete the 3,000m run in the same time that Sonia posted for Olympic run with all funds raised going to the Cobh Hospital.

In order to comply with social distancing guidelines the numbers will be restricted and runs of smaller groups at a time. The cost of entry is €10 and the link is on the hospital’s Facebook page, while there is also a Go Fund Me link on the hospital’s page also for those participants who wish to donate more than the entry fee, or for people who’d just like to contribute.

Runners will be presented with a specially commissioned Medal and for anyone who’d like to see the original medal, Sonia will have it with her on the day!

Commenting, Sonia said, “The Cobh Community Hospital provides a vital service to the area and I am thrilled that we have been able to organise this fundraising fun run. It’s hard to believe that it’s 20 years since the Sydney Olympics and what a great way to remember that wonderful day. I want to thank Shane and the team at EUROSPAR Cobh, my Ballymore AC club and the Friends of Cobh Hospital for making this possible. Hopefully, we will be successful in raising funds for the hospital.”

Sponsored by EUROSPAR Cobh, Retailer Shane Jones said: “EUROSPAR Cobh is thrilled to be supporting this fabulous event. Cobh is a town rich in sporting heritage, with none more famous than Sonia O’Sullivan and to be able to support our community this way is really exciting and I’m looking forward to the day.”

The 44 bed Cobh Community Hospital, established in 1908, is a trust run by a voluntary board of management.
